PRELIMINARY- (BASIC) LEVEL

RICE offers the Cambridge English courses, which are available at six levels:
1. Preliminary
2. Access
3. Achiever
4. Communicator
5. Expert
6. Mastery
The courses develop the following skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking

Objectives:

To be able to:

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases satisfying practical needs in connection with education, training, professional and social roles.
  • introduce him/herself and others.
  • ask and answer questions about personal details such as possessions, address and people known.
  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • read and understand short texts on familiar topics and obtain information from common signs and symbols.
  • Write short simple phrases and sentences in documents such as forms, lists and messages.
  • Gain confidence in using the English language for communication

Course structure:

Duration : 3 months (3 hours a week –Sundays)

Time : 9.30 am – 12.30 pm

Placement: A placement test will be conducted on admission in order to gauge the current standard of each individual learner.

Ms.Devika Rohana

Devika is a professional English Language teacher who has a rich experience in teaching for various levels and nationalities. She specializes in teaching English to those whose level is very low, including foreigners and also teaching corporate groups, English for Business Communication. She has completed the Access Certificate in English Teacher Training from City & Guilds, UK.

Having started her career as a Banker at Seylan Bank, Devika obtained part qualifications in the exams conducted by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. She switched onto training at the bank and got a taste for teaching through her experience as a corporate trainer, Devika shifted fields, and thereby went on to become a professional English language teacher.

Devika’s pleasing personality, experience and qualifications, have gained her a reputation of being one of the most sought out teachers at RICE. She currently conducts classes for staff of Suncity Developers (pvt) ltd and MAS Holdings. Devika is a product of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya.
